Export Terminology

Exporters may use the below definitions of common export terms to help understand and file the AES via our online form.

1. US Principle Party of Interest (USPPI)- The USPPI is generally the U.S. Seller or Manufacturer of the Goods or Vehicle. The USPPI normally is the party that is responsible to file the Electronic Export Information (EEI) through the AES Filing.

2. Ultimate Consignee: The Ultimate Consignee is the receiver of the export shipment abroad. Generally this is the buyer of the goods or vehicle.

3. EIN Number: This is the business tax ID number assigned by the Federal Government to a company or person. Since March 24th, 2010, the U.S. Social Security Number can no longer be used to identity the USPPI. This change was implemented to protect the SSN of the USPPI or authorized agent in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974. Instead, an Employer Identification Number (EIN) or a DUNS number must be used. For certain transactions the USPPI can use their passport number for vehicle exports if the vehicle is neither a sale or gift.

The EIN Number can be obtained free of charge from IRS Website: Link to Obtain an EIN

4. ITN Number : An Internal Transaction Number (ITN) is a confirmation number issued by the Automated Export System (AES) to exporters after they have successfully filed Electronic Export Information (EEI). It serves as proof that the EEI for a particular shipment has been accepted by the AES.

The internal transaction number (ITN) is a 14-digit number that corresponds to an export transaction in the Automated Export System. The ITN confirms that the exporter's shipment information has been accepted by the AES and is on file.

Format -The ITN consists of the letters “AES” followed by the ITN: for example, “AES X20080930987654.”

5. Electronic Export Information: EEI filing, or Electronic Export Information filing, is the process of submitting electronic data to the U.S. government through the Automated Export System (AES) when exporting goods from the United States.

6. COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Country of manufacture, production or growth, based upon the export laws, rules and regulation of the U.S.

7. Cross Border Port of Export: Country of manufacture, production or growth, based upon the export laws, rules and regulation of the U.S.

8. Port of Export for Ocean Vessel Cargo: Country of manufacture, production or growth, based upon the export laws, rules and regulation of the U.S.
