Contact / FAQS

1. How do I get my ITN for my vehicle export?

To get your ITN, simply fill out the "File AES for Vehicles" online filing form. Please note cross border vehicle exports require 72 hours or more advance notice to U.S. Customs. It is best to start the AES Filing 4-5 days before your intended border crossing date.

2. How long does it take to get my ITN Number?

We have a turnaround time of up to 12 hours from the time we receive your full submission, including electronic filing, payment, and all requested documents. Our average turnaround time is less than four hours when submitted.

3. What is the cost to file my export through AES-FILE.COM?

The fee to file AES is $75.

4. What do I do after receiving my AES Filing and ITN Number?

For Cross Border vehicle exports to Canada, contact the CBP Port Office to notify them.

5. What if I still owe money for my vehicle through a lease or financing agreement?

If you still have any amount owing on your vehicle, you will need an authorization letter from the lien holder granting you permission to remove the vehicle from the country, as well as a notarized electronic title printout from your state DMV.

6. I am a Canadian; can I use your service?

Our service can be used by anyone, regardless of residency or citizenship status. If the vehicle is on US soil when submitting the filing, you will be fine.

7. I am moving to Canada with a vehicle that I own, how do I complete the form?

You will be considered as both exporter and importer. You should use your US address for the export information and your Canadian address for the importer information. If you do not yet have a Canadian address, you can use the first address you will be residing at when crossing the border, whether that is a family, friend, or hotel.

8. I bought my car in Canada, moved with it to the US, and now am returning to Canada, do I still need to complete this process?

If you have registered/titled your vehicle in the US, you will be required to complete the AES filing process, as your vehicle has been deemed to have entered the US market. When completing your filing online you will enter the state in which your vehicle is currently registered/titled in as the “US State of Purchase.”

9. How far in advance of my export can I complete the AES filing?

You may submit your export filing up to four months before you physically export your vehicle.

10. I don’t know the exact date I want to cross, what should I put for it, and do I have to cross on the date that was submitted?

If you don’t know your exact date of export, enter your best guess. If you miss your export date or are otherwise delayed, nothing generally needs to be updated if you can complete your export within one month of your submitted export date. If you will be delayed beyond a month of the export date, please contact us with your new date of export and your AES reference number, so we may update your filing.

11. Why can’t I set my export date as 3 days from now, the border said they only need a 72-hour notification?

Completing the AES filing is not the same thing as submitting the 72-hour notification to US Customs. We require up to one business day to complete your filing and release your ITN. The ITN is required for the 72-hour notification to US customs, and this does not begin until the border has received and accepted your documentation.

We encourage a lead time of four to five business days, prior to your arrival at the border, to allow time for you to submit your filing and documentation, have your filing processed, and send notification to US Customs.

12. What is an Internal Transaction Number (ITN)?

This is a number assigned by US Census to a shipment confirming that the EEI (Electronic Export Information) was accepted and is on file. This number is required to export your vehicle from the US into Canada, you cannot cross without it. Please note that the AES reference number that is provided to you is different from the ITN.

13. What documentation will I need to cross the border?

You will require the following documents: Certificate of Title/Certificate of Origin, bill of sale / letter of gift, Shipper Export Declaration listing your ITN on it, your passport, proof of registration, and insurance.
If you are having the vehicle towed or trailered across the border, you will not need registration or insurance.

14. What do I need to do if I want to have a friend or relative drive the vehicle across the border for me?

If you will not be driving the vehicle yourself, you do not need to put the name of your friend or relative on the AES/ITN paperwork, as they are not part of the actual transaction.
You will need to complete an “Authorization to Transport” letter, a sample for your reference can be downloaded here .

15. What if after I make a payment for my export, I realize that I have entered the incorrect information?

Once you send in the required documents, we will review your filing and make any corrections that we may find. You can also contact us by e-mail or phone to go over any corrections that may be required.
